Concrefy’s accredited laboratories offer research into building materials in accordance with international standards.

  • R&D

    Our R&D department develops new technologies to optimise the concrete construction process and management of buildings and structures.

    Concrefy conducts research into new raw materials, materials and products for (concrete) construction. Sustainability, Cradle to Cradle (C2C) and Circular Design are our leading principles in these developments. The firm anchorage in the day-to-day activities of the concrete industry enables us to realise pragmatic applications right away.

    Concrefy’s R&D department also focuses very strongly on digital techniques with which technical key figures and management information can be generated during construction and the management phase. With the aid of DSTs, clients gain control and oversight at a glance.

    We continually aim for the pragmatic connection of fundamental and applied knowledge.


    As an independent international engineering firm, Concrefy has very modern laboratories for material science research.

    Concrefy offers customised packages including research from the creation of trials, collection of samples, conducting tests, reporting and the provision of advice on action.

    Our system can be applied for one or more production locations or even for an entire sector. You see in a single overview which tests have been conducted, the current phase of the test programme and the results of the research. Concrefy does not measure in order to know, but in order to steer.

Metal testing

Our laboratory is specialised in testing rebar and related products used in concrete construction. For steel producers we carry out verification tests on reinforcement steel. For cutting and bending plants and concrete factories, these are periodic tests on straightened reinforcement steel and also tests on welded joints that are manually or mechanically welded, such as reinforcement meshes, lattice girders or spiral reinforcement.

We have developed a methodology for process control of reinforcement steel that fully relieves the customer from the periodic checks required for certification, CE marking or regulatory purposes. This allows the manufacturer to focus on his production while the quality aspects are managed automatically.

  • Process control reinforcement steel

    Cutting and bending companies and concrete factories that produce reinforcement for the concrete industry must carry out periodic tests prescribed by product certification, CE marking (ISO 17660) or national regulations. We carry out the required tests for these companies in accordance with the prescribed standards and guidelines, but besides that we have set up our services in such a way that the customer is relieved completely.

    Via our web portal 'myConcrefy', manufacturers can use a secure login to keep track of the planning of periodic checks of straightening lines and also monitor the status of welders and welding machines via a welders list. The portal automatically calculates the dates on which tests must be carried out and the customer periodically receives an e-mail message with a reminder for the next tests to be carried out.

    The customer can register a new test through the portal by selecting the required machine or welder and create a test assignment for this. A handy wizard guides the customer through the registration process. This also results in a specification of the samples to be taken, which is aligned to the applicable regulations and the bar diameters used by the customer. A sample guide form is also created automatically, which the customer can use for internal communication during sampling. The samples are labelled by the customer with the identification number of the order and then placed in the Concrefy sample box.

    We make sure that the samples for tests that are registered by the customer are collected within five working days. Within five working days the samples are tested and the reports are published on our web portal. The customer automatically receives an e-mail message as soon as the reports are online and the next testing date for the machine or welder is also calculated. In the web portal, the reports can be easily accessed via the welder's list or the planning of the straightening lines.

Mechanical splices and Headed bars

For mechanical splices for reinforcement steel and headed bars, many international standards are available, setting different requirements and prescribing very specific tests. Our laboratory belongs to a selection of laboratories worldwide that are able to carry out these tests. We carry out these tests for manufacturers of these coupling systems, but also for contractors and other users of these products. Based on static, dynamic and cyclic loading tests, we assess whether the products meet all the requirements for use in bridges, viaducts, power stations, dams, high-rise buildings or stadiums.

  • Concrefy has wide experience in testing reinforcement couplers for mechanical splices of bars according to various international standards and for various types of projects. For our customers, it is important to have quick access to test results of the research, because the acquisition of an order often depends on it. With our team of experienced employees and a well-equipped laboratory, we ensure that our customers have their reports within a few days after delivery of the samples.
    When ISO 15835 tests have to be carried out, a combination of slip measurements with tensile tests, fatigue tests and low-cycle loading tests is often required. We routinely carry out these tests with a 1200 kN tensile and compression test machine (up to 40 mm bar diameter) and because we have high frequency pulsators (HFP) instead of hydraulic fatigue benches, a sample fatigue test takes only eight hours while hydraulic machines need an entire week for this test.

    The tests to be carried out on mechanical splices depend on the type of construction, the country and the risk of earthquakes at the location where the construction is being built.     Our laboratory is accredited by the Dutch Accreditation Council for the most common tests on mechanical joints. The RvA is a co-signatory of ILAC MRA, which means that our test results are recognised in all participating countries.

Asphalt testing

Concrefy carries out asphalt research according to the CE marking. Asphalt, supplied to contractors in the Netherlands and abroad, must meet criteria with regards to water sensitivity, stiffness and fatigue (together in one test) and permanent deformation. After completion of a project, clients often require a delivery inspection that can be carried out by Concrefy. Concrefy is accredited for examining asphalt samples for layer thickness (NEN-EN 12697-36), density (12697-06), the pore content (cavities) (12697-08), the particle size distribution (12697-02) and the bitumen content (NEN-EN 12697-01).
Asphalt is subdivided according to the application, for example AC22Base is a substrate with a max. grain size of 22mm. Other examples are AC08Surf as a cover layer and AC16Bind as an intermediate layer.

  • The regulations in accordance with RAW and recording of the various mixtures [DAB, OAB, GAB, StAB, SMA, ZOAB ??} have become generally accepted and used and even the reuse of asphalt in combination with life cycle analysis (LCA) has found its way into the asphalt world.

    Asphalt properties that are important:
    • the resistance to permanent deformation (track forming);
    • the fatigue resistance (caused by repetitive pressure);
    • the resistance to crack growth (at the top and bottom of the structure).
    This always in combination with the final purpose.

Sand, gravel and recycling granulates

Concrefy’s highly qualified employees handle the complete testing of aggregates and recycled granulates for the concrete and asphalt industry.
For initial assessment (ITT) or suitability testing, we can perform the relevant physical, chemical and petrographic tests in accordance with current standards. These tests are necessary for the admission check for CE marking and / or KOMO certification for, for example, BRL2502 and BRL2506.

We can take care of the complete product quality control of granular materials, you will be completely relieved from sampling to analysis of quality records.

  • In the area of:
    • mechanical properties, e.g. compressive strength en deformation
    • physical properties, e.g. wear resistance, thermal behaviour and naturally density
    • chemical properties, e.g. composition and any impurities
    requirements are set for the many possibilities and outcomes for potential materials. The NEN-EN 12620 and NEN 5905 are examples of this.
    In the Netherlands, aggregate material is normally formed by sand and gravel. In the neighbouring countries, these materials are less available and, based on availability, other raw materials such as basalt, granite, limestone, quartz and slag become the usual aggregate materials.
    For the ever-increasing demand for recycled materials - read: secondary raw materials - to replace primary raw materials in building materials, Concrefy develops innovative systems to be able to use these materials as high-quality as possible for re-use. In this way we help socially responsible construction.

    The Concrefy laboratory is NEN-EN ISO \ IEC 17025 accredited by the Dutch Accreditation Council (Raad voor Accreditatie).
